National Poetry Day:

On Monday the 31st of September, it was National Poetry Day! Within the centre, we spent time exploring our favourite Nursery Rhymes in different ways. As a centre, it was important for us to celebrate this day as we are passionate about encouraging our children to listen to what is around them and developing their phonological awareness before leaving us to further their phonics learning in school.

In Kits & Rabbits room, they have been exploring one of their favourite rhymes - ‘Tiny Tim the Turtle’! The children love the anticipation before the bubble finally pops! The key workers within the rooms have been exposing the children to activities surrounding this rhyme. We played with lots of water and bubbles - ‘can you feel the bubbles pop in your hands?’ and ‘can you hear them popping with your ears?’.

In Hedgehogs room, their chosen Nursery Rhyme was the ‘Wheels on The Bus’. As a classic and firm favourite of the children, it was only right to explore this rhyme further. The children have participated in a range of activities around ‘things that go’ inline with our curriculum. We have investigated different ways we can design and build our own ramps for our modes of transport. We discussed how different textures and surfaces can change the way our transport travels and moves. We have used different textures of wheels to mark make and print - ‘Can you sing the rhyme as we make marks?’ and ‘How can we adapt and change the rhyme to make it our own?’

In Foxes room, their chosen Nursery Rhyme was ‘Incy Wincy Spider’. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning new actions to this rhyme! Within the Creative Area, the children have been making their own spiders. They have been highly successful in picking and finding their own resources to be successful in their spider making. The children have enjoyed threading their chosen materials through holes to make their spiders legs! Additionally from this Nursery Rhyme, the children have continued to explore others. They have enjoyed ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ where they have made their own glittery stars as well as ‘The Cow jumped over the Moon’. The children have been helping Rebecca to build and create our Nursery Rhyme wall. Now, it is full of wonderful creations!
