Hardmoor Early Years Centre was excited to welcome Southampton City Council’s Mayor, Councillor Alex Houghton, to the Centre on Saturday 14th May to help celebrate planting a tree to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee.

The lilac tree, kindly donated by Shergolds Nursery, was planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. After sharing a few words, the Mayor was helped by some of the children who attend the Centre to plant the tree, which was placed by the entrance path for everyone to enjoy.

A cake sale was also held the week before to raise funds for a plaque to mark the event. The Centre were grateful for the Mayor’s time and interest and was gifted a box of eggs as a thank you – directly from the chickens kept at the Centre and maintained as part of the children’s learning.

Hardmoor Early Years Centre now looks forward to watching the tree grow and develop and be used as part of the learning at this woodland nursery on the edge of the city.
